Here are Carinya British SH, we pride ourselves in the nature & health of all kittens & cats we put up for adoption. While we can test for many things these days, ther is still so much we can’t test for & even with testing, there are some things we, as breeders, could never 100% guarantee against, but we do our best.

Three of the main issues we can’t 100% guarantee against are:

Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM)

Unfortunately, while we test our breeding cats yearly via scanning, this does not stop HCM from developing in the cats days, weeks or years down the track or even in their off-spring. There is no fool proof test, in any breed, including the common domestic pet cats, which tells us if a cat carries the gene or not which we understand can be extremely frustrating for new owners, however, there isn’t once available for humans as yet either. Medicine in humans is far more advanced than it is in animals & we just have to hope the tests will become available for the British breed in the near future.

Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP)

FIP is a serious and often fatal disease in cats caused by a mutated strain of the feline coronavirus. It primarily affects young cats under two years of age but can occur in cats of any age. While it appears there could possibly be a genetic link with this disease, there has been no definitive research to prove this. If caught early, there is now treatments that can be given where cats make full recovery & go onto live long lives.

Gingervitis

While British Shorthairs don’t have breed-specific dental diseases, their compact jaw structure and love for food can make them susceptible to plaque buildup. Their laid-back nature might also mean they’re less likely to chew on toys that naturally clean teeth, unlike more active breeds. Regular dental checkups help catch issues early, ensuring your cat’s mouth stays in top shape.

KITTENS AVAILABLE

Flights can be arranged to all major airports within Australia at new owners costs. We work with new owners to ensure the safest & most cost effective travel arrangements are acheived for our babies. We have & will occasionally allow our young ones to travel overseas as long as the conditions are right. There are times of the year when travelling is a little more difficult due to the weather, however, the transport companies we work with are well versed with these issues & only recommend the best flights.
Kittens will travel in their own brand new carry cages [Airline approved PP20’s usually] with a thick bed [incase their water spills, as they must travel with water these days]. Documentation pertaining to new kittens will be sent prior to their arrival.

RETIREES AVAILABLE

At Carinya British SH, we believe that the kids we keep for breeding are not machines & deserve to find their own slaves to live their lives out bossing around. This is why, after our girls have finished being mums for us [a maximum of 3 litters], we find the perfect family for them to retire into. Some of our kids will walk into their new homes with little problems, however, we do sometimes have shyer, more reserved girls who will require special families who have the time to let them settle in & shine in their own time. Our cats are NOT raised around dogs, so please keep this in mind when you take your new baby home if you have dogs. Many of our cats have become best friends with their doggy mates, but it does take time for many of them.
